Gym Etiquette

  1. Tae Kwon Do is for self defense only! It is not to be used irresponsibly, and especially not in school or on the playground.

  2. Students are to remove their shoes before entering the gym and put them in the appropriate place in the lobby. Upon entering the gym students bow, first to the flags, then the instructor, and finally to any Black Belts in the gym per rank in descending order. Bowing is also conducted at the beginning and end of class to the flags and Black Belts as well as during class. It is done as a sign of respect and thanks; it is similar to our handshake.

  3. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, fowl language, and any form of disruptive behavior are not allowed or tolerated by students or visitors in the gym. Gum and pop are also not allowed in the gym and are restricted to the lobby area.

  4. Inform the Black Belt instructors if you are injured or ill before or during class.

  5. A student's uniform, equipment, and person shall be well kept and clean. This includes keeping nails trimmed and long hair tied back.

  6. Watches, rings, neck chains, bracelets, earrings, or any type of jewelry that could cause harm or be broken during training must be removed.

  7. A positive attitude is expected from all students during class. No other attitude or behavior will be tolerated.

  8. The utmost respect will be shown to Master Instructors, Black Belt instructors, other Black Belts and seniors. When in the gym or in the lobby, any Black Belt in uniform will be referred to as "master", "mister", "miss", "sir", or "ma' am" as appropriate.

  9. Uniforms are to be worn for Tae Kwon Do functions only.

  10. Students will address Masters, Black Belts, instructors, higher ranks and adults, as "Sir" or "Ma'am" before and at the end of a question or conversation both in and out of the gym.

  11. Master instructors include Black Belts ranking fourth degree or higher and will be referred to as "Master (last name)". Black belts will be referred to as "Mister (name)" or "Miss (name)". Senior color belts will be referred to as "Mister (first name)" or "Miss (first name)".

  12. Students are expected to be loyal and to never criticize the instructors, Tae Kwon Do, or any of its functions, unless asked for constructive criticism. All other commentary is considered destructive and will not be tolerated. Criticism or concerns shall be addressed to the master or instructor in private after class. Remember before offering criticism; ask a question to help better understand before criticizing.

  13. The student is expected to adopt a learning attitude and is expected to try learning something in every situation, looking for the positive, not negative. This attitude is a quality of any good Tae Kwon Do student.

  14. Behavior outside the gym is also expected to be upstanding and exemplary. Each student is a representative of the gym and the instructors. Each student must remember this and serve as a good example for the gym in the community as well as for junior students.

  15. Tuition is to be paid at the beginning of each month. Test fees should be paid prior to the exam. Further information on monthly fees and test fees appear later in this manual.

  16. Safety is very important while training as well as competing and must be kept in mind at all times.

  17. Students are to maintain focus on their own training without becoming preoccupied with what other students are doing.

  18. Instructors have the right to dismiss a student from class or from the gym permanently for disruptive or unacceptable behavior. If the expulsion is permanent, the student will forfeit tuition, belts and certification.

  19. Students are required to call or let the instructor know when and why they will be missing class. If the student fails to notify the instructor it will be considered an unexcused absence.

  20. As in any educational institution, the instructor knows and will decide when a student is ready for their next exam.

  21. The student is to maintain open communications with the instructor. This is important to insuring success in Tae Kwon Do. Open communication keeps the instructor informed of how a student is doing, how the student is getting along, and if there is a problem. The instructors are there to help the students and will make great efforts to help a student when and if possible.

  22. The student is expected to put forth a good effort and try their best in all Tae Kwon Do functions.

  23. Only approved uniforms and patches are to be worn in and out of the gym by students and instructors in the Ultimate Kicks Tae Kwon Do and Lee's Tae Kwon Do program.

  24. Once these basic rules are understood, students are expected to have fun, to enjoy their Tae Kwon Do training time and to be the best they can be.
