The Hwa Rang Do was a military, social and educational organization in the Silla Dynasty of Korea (57 A.D.-935 A.D.) The Hwa Rang Do organization followed five principles: loyalty to the nation, respect for one's parents, and courage in battle, exercising discretion in using violence and in taking a life. The organization was established to develop strong minds and bodies. The students practiced a variety of martial art skills and had a limited membership. The organization and its principles were, and skills are, very highly respected and serve as the backbone of a good society even almost two thousand years ago. The principles of Hwa Rang Do were instrumental in guiding the youth to become good persons and good citizens and are ideals to which we still aim to achieve in today's society. The Hwa Rang Do is the basis for the roots of what is now Tae Kwon Do. (Excerpts from Tae Kwon Do: Basic Techniques and Taeguk Poomse by Jeong Rok Kim, pg. 27)
